The moving truck has left, half the boxes are inside, and the single key the previous owner handed over turns the knob but not the deadbolt.
In plain words
Most lockouts end with the original lock still on the door and still working. That is the point of professional entry: picks, tension tools, decoders and latch tools are designed to operate the mechanism the way a key would, without cutting or prying anything. Drilling is reserved for cylinders that will not yield, and when it is the only route the locksmith says so before starting and fits a replacement cylinder in the same visit so you are never left with a hole where a lock used to be. You keep your hardware, your finish and your existing keys whenever the situation allows.
How the visit goesThe keypad on the smart lock blinks once and goes dark. The batteries have finally given up, your phone is at four percent, and the little backup key that came in the box is in a kitchen drawer on the other side of the door.

How the visit goes

Checking a smart or keypad lock before opening it
Electronic locks get their own set of questions. Is the keypad completely dead or just refusing the code? Are there battery contacts on the outside that accept a nine-volt battery for a temporary boost? Is there a mechanical override cylinder behind a cover, and does anyone hold the key for it? Is the lock paired to an app that could unlock it from a phone, and has the phone been factory reset lately? These checks decide whether the door can be opened by simply restoring power, by using the override cylinder, or by treating it like any other lock. It also tells the locksmith what to reset once you are inside.
Least invasive first, always
The opening follows a ladder. At the bottom rung are methods that operate the lock exactly as a key would: single-pin picking, raking or decoding the cylinder so the plug turns and the bolt withdraws. Next come bypasses that work around the cylinder, slipping a spring latch or reaching the inside thumb-turn with a purpose-made tool. Only when the hardware defeats all of those does drilling come into the conversation, and it is a conversation, not a surprise. Working up this ladder means the lock is intact in the great majority of cases and you close the door behind the locksmith with the same hardware you had that morning.
The missing key is now just a piece of metal
If the cylinder was rekeyed, whoever has the old key is holding something that fits the keyway and turns nothing. You receive the new keys, typically two or three, cut from the fresh pin combination rather than copied from a worn original, so they will operate crisply for years. It is worth counting them, deciding who in the household gets one, and writing down where the spare lives. If several doors were brought onto the same new key, test each one before the locksmith drives off. From this point the lost key is a story to tell, not a worry to carry.

What affects the quote
Damage from earlier attempts
A latch bent by a credit card or a cylinder scarred by a screwdriver may need repair or replacement in addition to the opening. The locksmith points out what was already there before quoting that part.
Whether the key is inside or lost
If the key is inside, the visit ends when the door opens. If it was lost out in the world, rekeying and fresh keys usually follow, and that is separate work priced on its own.
Interior door or exterior door
A bathroom privacy lock or a bedroom door is generally a lighter job than an exterior deadbolt, and an old keyed interior mortise lock sits somewhere between. The quote follows the hardware, not the room.
What to have ready
- Has the lock been stiff, sticky or hard to turn in recent weeks?
- Do you own the home, rent it, or manage it for someone else?
- Does the same key open other doors on the property?
Home Lockout Service: questions
QuestionsDo I have to show identification before you open my door?
Yes, and it is a reassuring step rather than a hurdle. Photo identification that matches the address settles it in seconds. When your identification still carries a previous address, other proof does the job: a tenancy agreement, a recent bill, a piece of addressed mail, or a word with your building manager. Locksmiths take this seriously because it protects every home they are asked to open, including yours.
Can a frozen lock be opened, and how do I stop it freezing again?
Frozen cylinders open well with patience: lock de-icer or gentle warming melts the ice so the plug turns, and the cylinder is then dried and treated with a dry lubricant that sheds moisture. Hot water is avoided because it refreezes and can crack cold metal. To prevent a repeat, keep a storm door closed over the main lock, fit a keyhole cover on exposed side doors, and carry a small de-icer in your coat or car through the freeze-thaw months.
What if the door is stuck rather than the lock?
This is more common than people expect, especially in older houses and at the change of seasons. A door that has swollen, sagged on its hinges or been pushed out of square by thick weatherstripping can pin the bolt against the strike so it will not draw back even with the right key. The locksmith relieves the pressure to free the bolt, then adjusts the strike, hinges or seal so the door closes and locks without a shoulder.
