Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey in Walsh
You were shovelling the driveway after dark and the ring must have slid out of your coat pocket somewhere under a metre of snow.
In plain words
If you rent, losing a key is handled in three steps rather than one. Tell your landlord first, since a lock change on a rented unit goes smoother when both sides know about it and both end up with a working key. Then the locksmith rekeys the suite door, and any other cylinder that key fitted, with both parties knowing. Finally new keys are cut for you and for the landlord's set, so the arrangement that existed before the loss is restored on a fresh combination. Landlords generally welcome the call; their hardware stays in place and their own key set is refreshed too.
How the visit goesThe lawyer's envelope held two keys for the new house. The previous owners mention a cleaner, a dog walker and a brother who checked on the place, and the builder's paperwork shows six were cut originally. Four are unaccounted for.

How the visit goes

What was on the ring
The next few minutes are spent on the ring itself, because a key ring is a bundle of different problems. House keys point to cylinders that will be repinned. A garage remote points to an opener whose memory should be cleared. A building fob or parking card points to a property manager. A car key with a chip points to the automotive side of the trade. A tag with an address, a licence lost in the same bag, or a work lanyard in the same pocket changes how soon the household side should be settled. Listing it all before any tool comes out means nothing on the ring is forgotten when the van pulls away.
Handling a restricted or high-security keyway
Restricted and patented keyways rekey in much the same way, with more parts and a little more care. A high-security cylinder's own elements, a sidebar's finger pins, a rotating element or another system-specific part, are reset to the new key's profile alongside the ordinary pins, and the finished plug is checked before refitting. Key blanks for these systems are issued through whatever authorised channel that system uses, a letter, a registered account, a dealer agreement, or sometimes a key card; bring whatever credential you were given. The reward is that copies of the new key can only be made through that same channel, one of the stronger kinds of key control a household can have.
The old key is now a piece of brass
Whatever became of the lost key, it stopped mattering the moment the last cylinder went back on the door. It still slides into the keyway, because the keyway did not change, but the pins inside no longer line up with its cuts, so it turns nothing. Whoever finds it in a snowbank in April, or already has it in a drawer, holds a shape that fits your lock and does nothing to it. That is the whole purpose of the visit, and it is worth pausing on: the worry that started the day has a definite ending, and you can watch it demonstrated with the old key in your own hand.

What affects the quote
Master-keyed building cylinders
A condominium or apartment suite cylinder on a building master system is pinned so the master still works, which takes coordination with management and a little more time than a stand-alone house door.
Paperwork for a landlord or building
Where a landlord, condominium or lease requires a written record of the lock change and key count, preparing that note and any key register update is a small named item.
Upgrades chosen during the visit
Some people take the moment to move to a heavier deadbolt, a restricted keyway, a reinforced strike or a lockbox for the spare. None of it is required; each option is a separate line.
What to have ready
- Was anything with your address, such as a licence or a mail tag, lost with the keys?
- Do you own the property, rent it, or manage it for someone else?
- Do you know roughly how many copies of the old key exist?
Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey: questions
QuestionsWhat is a restricted keyway, and is it worth having?
A restricted keyway uses a controlled key profile whose blanks are supplied only through an authorised channel; the credential required, a letter, a registered account, a dealer agreement or a key card, depends on the system. Rekeying such a cylinder is routine work with the right pin kit. For a household that has just lost a key and wants the next one to be truly countable, it is a sensible upgrade for the main doors, and it can be fitted during the same visit.
Should I rekey after a renovation or when a cleaner stops coming?
It is good practice whenever a key has been out of your hands for a while and you are not certain it came back. Contractors, cleaners, sitters and short-term guests all have honest reasons to hold a key, and most return it, but a rekey at the end of the arrangement is what turns 'probably' into certainty. Some households make it a habit at the close of every project.
Can a rekey be done in winter, and will the locks freeze afterwards?
Winter is a normal time for this work. Cylinders come off the door and are pinned in the van, out of the wind, and go back on with a dry graphite or PTFE lubricant that sheds moisture rather than holding it the way oil does. A cleaned, dry-lubricated cylinder is less likely to freeze than the gritty one it replaced. Keeping a storm door closed over the main lock helps through freeze-thaw weeks.
